A little-known vacation season in Bryson City is the ultimate getaway for couples and solo adventurers. It's a quieter season; it is not quite leaf color season in August and September, and many families are busy with back-to-school preparation. What does this mean for you? The weather is warm, outdoor adventures are plentiful, the trails are uncrowded, and more cabin rental options are available. Here are some of our favorite places to explore in the Great Smoky Mountains of Bryson City during late summer:

Elk Rut

What is an elk rut? Also referred to as the "bugle" of the elk, it is a distinctive call of the bulls during the mating season. The rut season runs from mid-September through late October, however sometimes this can start in early September. You may also hear the clash of antlers as bulls challenge each other in a battle for dominance.Find out where to view the elk.

Water Sports

Canoes and paddleboards on the lake
Get ready to embrace the warm weather and refreshing cool water while enjoying various water activities, including:.

  • Whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River - Outfitters stay open through the fall season
  • Tubing - Most tubing outfitters stay open after Labor Day, as long as the weather stays warm. Always call ahead to make sure.
  • Paddleboarding and Kayaking on Lake Fontana is one of the most peaceful ways to get outdoors and explore the scenic mountain lake views. Fontana Lake borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Call ahead after Labor Day as a few outfitters will close after Labor Day. Others, including Carolina Bound Adventures, remain open through most of the year.

Zipline

zipline adventure park

Soar through and above mountain terrain treetops for views you'll not experience on the ground. Guided zipline tours in Bryson City's Great Smoky Mountains are immersed in nature with an experience that is both unique and exciting. Zipline outfitters offer experiences for adults and kids, including a zipline adventure park, and they stay open through the fall season.

Train Excursions

Train Events

Experience the beauty of the Smoky Mountain countryside on a train excursion on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. During the summer and fall season, there are several daily excursions, including the Tuckasegee River Excursion and the Nantahala Gorge Excursion. We recommend the open-air car option to fully experience the cool mountain air and allow for better photography options.
