The unincorporated community of Wesser is located 14 miles southwest of Bryson City in the Nantahala River Gorge and is the location of many whitewater rafting outfitters, zipline, and fishing guides. Restaurant options include Rivers End, Big Wesser Barbecue, and Pizza by the River.

Cherokee, North Carolina is located 10 miles east of Bryson City, and is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Popular attractions include the Oconaluftee Indian Village, Unto These Hills Outdoor Drama, and Harrah's Cherokee Casino. You'll also find the Oconaluftee entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including elk watching and a visitor center.
