Fishing on the Nantahala River

The Nantahala River is located upstream of the Duke Energy Power Plant in Nantahala. There are miles of pocket water and pools teeming with Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, and Brown Trout. The  Nantahala Benefits from both hatchery-supported, stocked March through October,  and a natural population of trout. This ensures a diverse and abundant fishery for anglers to enjoy. The stream is designated as a Delayed Harvest water, meaning that catch and release regulations are in place at certain times of the year.

When it comes to accessing parts of these waters, the river's ease of moderate wading makes it accessible to anglers of varying skill levels. The Nantahala River is a fisherman’s dream come true with the variety of trout, beautiful scenic river spots, and a must-visit destination.

Hatchery-supported trout waters are closed 30 minutes past sunset on the last day of February until 7 am on the first Saturday in April (opening day). While fishing is closed, Wildlife personnel will stock all hatchery-supported trout waters.
