Deep Creek Horse Trail

Trail Information

Located just outside of Bryson City within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Deep Creek Horse Trail offers a scenic 4-mile out-and-back hike through dense forest alongside Deep Creek. The trail begins just past the Noland Divide Trail trailhead and immediately settles into a wooded path that follows the creek upstream.

Early on, you’ll pass near the Juney Whank Falls area, though the main access to the falls is via the separate Juney Whank Trail. As you continue, the trail remains well-marked and relatively gentle, with occasional muddy patches and uneven footing, especially after rain. You’ll cross small drainage areas and pass several spots where the creek runs close to the trail, offering opportunities to step off and enjoy the water.

The trail gradually winds deeper into the forest, maintaining a steady, moderate feel. As you approach the latter portion of the route, it continues toward its intersection with Deep Creek Trail near Indian Creek Falls. Many hikers choose to turn around here, making the return trip along the same peaceful, shaded path. Throughout the hike, be prepared to share the trail with horses, as this is a designated horse trail within the park.
