Nantahala Bikeway ( Nantahala National Forest)

Trail Information

Located just outside Bryson City along the Nantahala Gorge corridor in western North Carolina, the Nantahala Bikeway is a short paved rail-trail that follows a former railroad spur through the scenic Nantahala River valley. The trail is approximately 1.2 miles one-way, making it an easy out-and-back ride or walk suitable for all skill levels.

The trail begins near National Forest Road/Winding Stairs Road and follows a gentle, mostly flat route alongside the Nantahala River toward the Nantahala Gorge recreation area. Early in the route, you’ll pass through a forested corridor where the old rail line has been converted into a smooth asphalt path.

As you continue, the trail opens up to scenic river and mountain views, with sections that run close to the water and others that weave through shaded woodland. The route eventually leads toward the busy rafting and paddling launch area in the gorge, where the bikeway connects with recreation access points before turning back the same way.

Because this follows a historic rail corridor, the grade is very gradual, making it one of the most accessible and relaxed rides in the Bryson City area.
