Mouse Branch Trail (Tsali Recreation area)

Just across Fontana Lake from Bryson City, the Mouse Branch Loop at Tsali Recreation Area delivers one of the most accessible and scenic introductions to the legendary Tsali trail system. Known for its smooth singletrack, lake views, and rolling mountain terrain, this loop is a favorite for riders, hikers, and horseback riders looking for a shorter but rewarding outdoor adventure.

Getting There

From Bryson City, head west on US-74/US-19 toward the Nantahala Gorge. Turn onto NC-28 North toward Robbinsville, crossing Fontana Lake. Continue for a short drive, then turn onto Tsali Road and follow signs into the Tsali Recreation Area.

Parking is available at the trailhead area, along with basic amenities including restrooms and access points for all four Tsali loops.

Trail Overview

  • Distance: ~6.5–9 miles (loop variation dependent)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Trail Type: Directional singletrack loop
  • Uses: Mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding (rotating schedule)
  • Best For: Scenic lake views + flowy, non-technical riding/hiking

The Mouse Branch Loop is the shortest of the Tsali system, making it a great starting point if you’re new to the area or want a quicker ride or hike without sacrificing scenery.

The Trail Experience

The adventure begins as the trail gently rolls into the forest, quickly revealing the signature Tsali landscape—ridge-top singletrack wrapping above the blue waters of Fontana Lake. The terrain here is mostly smooth and flowing, with steady climbs that never feel too punishing and descents that let you settle into a rhythm.

Early in the route, you’ll find a junction marked with “Suggested Route of Travel” signage—be sure to follow the directional flow, especially if you’re biking, as Tsali operates on a rotating-use system to keep traffic safe and trails in great shape.

The forest opens and tightens in waves, giving you alternating sections of shade, filtered sunlight, and occasional peek-through views of the lake below.

Must-See Highlight: Mouse Branch Overlook

One of the standout moments on the loop is the short spur to the Mouse Branch Overlook. This quick detour leads to one of the best panoramic views in the entire Tsali system—where Fontana Lake stretches out below and the Smoky Mountains rise in layers beyond. It’s an ideal place to pause, take photos, and soak in the quiet.

Trail Feel & Conditions

Expect a ride or hike that feels:

  • Smooth and fast in many sections
  • Gently rolling with moderate climbs
  • Non-technical compared to more rugged mountain trails
  • Dry and stable (no creek crossings on this loop)

The trail is well-maintained and designed for flow, making it especially popular with mountain bikers looking for a fun, rhythmic ride without extreme technical features.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Tsali is a shared-use system with rotating access days (bikes vs. horses), so check the schedule before heading out
  • Directional signage is important—follow posted routes
  • Bring water and snacks; there are no services on the trail itself
  • Expect limited shade in some exposed ridge sections during midday heat
  • Small day-use fee may apply (honor system)
